Porosity(n)- The ratio of volume of voids to the volume of soil is called as Porosity(n).
Porosity or void fraction is a measure of the void (i.e. "empty") spaces in a material, and is a fraction of the volume of voids over the total volume, between 0 and 1, or as a percentage between 0% and 100%.
- Porosity is a measure of pore spaces in soil.
- It is a volumetric ratio.
- It is ratio of total volume of voids (filled with water or air) to the total aggregate volume of soil mass.
`n=\frac{V_v}V\times100`
- The porosity of loose soils can be about η = 50 to 60%.
- The porosity of compact soils is about η = 30 to 40%.
