Void Ratio (e)

Void Ratio (e)

Void Ratio (e): The ratio of volume of voids (`V_v=V_{a\}+V_{w\ }`) to the total volume (V) of solids is called as void ratio.

`e=\frac{V_{a\}+V_{w\}}{V_s}`

`e=\frac{V_v}{V_s}`

  • The volume of voids to the volume of solids is void ratio.
  • The volume of voids to total volume is porosity.
  • The volume of voids includes the volume of air voids as well as the volume of water present.
Since the volume of voids can be less than the volume of solids or it can be greater than the volume of solids. Hence, it can take any value greater than zero
